Kuben Govender started training under Shifu Ave Vink in 1986, learning Wing Chun and then later changed to the more traditional Shaolin style of Lohan Chuan. Under the instruction of Shifu Ave he began studying White Crane, Tai Tzu, Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, Chi Na, Chi Kung and many other traditional forms of Chinese Kung Fu. Also as a bonus, he studied fire-arm techniques and strategies under Shifu Ave, who was a Human Shield and ex-special forces  military man.

Kuben is a traditionalist and a purist when it comes to Chinese Martial Arts. His no-nonsense approach to training has inspired many of the students and he favours “real-life” fighting, pressure point fighting, and small join manipulation as opposed to the flashy “dancing and synchronised gymnastics” that modern Kung Fu now seems to teach.

In 2014 he successfully graded to 4th degree and was awarded the prestigious Seven Star Kwan Dao by Master Su.

He is now a senior instructor at the very same Kwoon that he started training in.
